Lioness and Cub

The morning sun bled into the blackness of night, the land stirring as its warm embrace stretched across the plains.

The morning sun bled into the blackness of night, the land stirring as its warm embrace stretched across the plains.  Beneath an arcing baobab Lioness stretched and yawned, her cub already awake and playfully tugging at her tail.

“Wake up, wake up” she said excitedly, “it’s morning and we need to find breakfast.”

Lioness looked down at her cub.  “Save your strength young one” she said in her deep calming voice “the hunt is no game and not to be taken lightly.” She stretched slowly got to her feet.

“Can I go look for gazelle” the cub asked excitedly.  “I am a good lookout” she insisted chasing her own tail and spinning around in the tall dry grass “and father does so enjoy gazelle.”

The lioness walked slowly away from the shade of the tree and felt the warming rays on her skin.

“I like gazelle too” the cub said proudly.  “Does that mean I am like father?” she asked.

Lioness laughed “You are indeed my child” she answered,  “but we are also not so different to the gazelle you know” she added.

“But gazelle has horns” cub said quizzically, “and she has no claws and looks nothing like we do.”

For a moment cub forgot what her mother was saying as she spotted a large red butterfly fluttering just above the ground ahead of them.  She did rather enjoy chasing butterflies.

“How are we the same mother” cub asked eyes still locked on the butterfly.

“If we are to live then we must eat, and if we are to eat then we must run faster than the gazelle” Lioness said.  “And if the gazelle is to live then she must run faster than the lions.  That is the way of the plains, as always it has been.”

“Well I am faster than the wind” Cub said proudly, “One day I will perhaps even be faster than cheetah.  Just watch.”

Lioness smiled as Cub broke into a run chasing the butterfly, racing through the grass jumping and falling until eventually she gave up and watched the insect disappear into the sky.

“I will catch it next time” Cub insisted trotting back to her mother’s side.

“Indeed you will my cub, indeed you will.”

Screw you haiku

All things do not happen for a reason. They just happen.

Aah, those chipper people who always find something positive to say no matter what.  You know them right, the “everything happens for a reason” crowd.  Mostly I find that they say this because a world where terrible things happen just cannot surely reconcile with what they believe.  Not sure that catching aids from a blood transfusion happens for a reason myself,  and no there is surely no good reason that a kid gets molested or a suicide bomber blows up a bus.

All things don’t happen for a reason, that’s a load of bollocks.  Terrible things happen, that’s just part of life.  It isn’t part of some big plan so stop telling me it is because your belief system cannot explain how such terrible things can happen otherwise.

Colleen’s Tanka Tuesday: New & Experience

I don’t take many things seriously but I am going to make a concerted effort to do Colleen’s challenges properly.

Colleen’s Tanka Tuesday

I don’t take many things seriously as you probably know but I am going to make a concerted effort to do Colleen’s challenges properly when I do them.  I have scant regard for the correct use of haiku and tanka and often do such beastly things to them but I think it is also important to show appreciation for the little blighters because they are so fabulous when done right.

This week the challenge was to use synonyms for GUIDE and DESTINATION.  I used MAP then STEER and INTENTION then DESIGN.  And its about change so that is another box ticked, and it is in the first person kind of maybe so I am thinking I have the structure and subject just about nailed if nothing else.

A path less travelled

raw emotions unchartedn

no map or compass

No intention or outcome

passenger to circumstance

Heart, fragile design

it races headlong unchecked

wildly, no steer

Until rest, satisfaction

contented at journeys end

Ronovan Writes Haiku Challenge: Magic and Hope

Haiku challenge using ‘Short’ and ‘Sexy’. I feel I may be being set up…

Ronovan provides the words.  Then a haiku follows.  Though mine are kinda haiku in form only and I believe senryu in every other way.

hope springs eternal

like magic it inspires

until you give up

Oh lordy that was a bit bleak wasn’t it.

She feels the magic

first impressions electric

and hopes he’s not gay

Hmm no still a bit dour

Walt’s magic kingdom

bringing hope for sick children

a treat before death

Oh I think maybe I should just give up today.   There was such potential for merriment and hope and things of beauty.

😉

U is for UY Scuti

Try imagine this…

There are things that freak me out and UY Scuti is one of them.  It boggles my mind in such a way that it makes me want to curl up in a ball in a darkened room and consider just how insignificant we all are in this big old universe.

UY Scuti is a red super-giant star and currently the largest known by radius.  Approximately 1700 times that of our sun.  It has a volume 5 BILLION times that of our sun.

Seem big yet?  If it was at the centre of our universe it would engulf the orbit of Jupiter.  JUPITER!

Still struggling?  Take a look at the pictures below and try imagine it.  The universe is frigging amazing!

This shows UY Scuti compared to our Sun.

Follow the picture below, might give you a sense of just how big it is.

Screw you haiku

what a mess!

haiku9118Whilst I don’t dress up I do love me a great Con, and there is a quite wonderful feeling when you’re surrounded by people just like you.  There are round bellied bearded men as far as the eye can see and you cannot swing a Schrodinger’s cat without clobbering a bespectacled comic-based t-shirt wearing geek.

If you’ve never been to one you should go, because they really do embody the very best in people.  There is a distinct lack of wankers, twats, dicks, racist, -phobes or utter prats.

People I enjoy – Linda the Maine Paper Pusher

Each week I am going to reblog someone that I enjoy reading.  This week it is Linda who is always so fabulously positive and sparkly.  She has been a huge encouragement to me since I started doing this lark too, she’s just that sort you know.  Oh and she loves Pokemon.  And has some HUGE dogs, you should check them out.

Linda  – I tried to do fancier reblogs but nothing I do seems to work at all.  Very frustrating.

Check her out here

Think I need an early night

Okay so not so much a thought as the culmination of many thoughts.  Arguments aside over exactly what the best phone is I recently bought me eldest the New Samsung on the basis that he promised to stay off of social media.  Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and whatever else I may choose to broadly lump into that category.  I will then, every couple of years, upgrade him to the newest handset assuming he has stayed off it all.

He happily agreed, and whilst in the future he may not, for now I think it is something worthwhile because I am pretty convinced that the damage done by social media outweighs the benefits.  There will be studies I am sure, but I am not basing it on them I am basing it on my experience and the pressure it puts on people and the need to broadcast ones life click by click.

There is an irony in blogging about this I am sure, and my blogs do post to twitter, but it is something I am happy I did because I think the kids will be better people for it in the long run.  No one needs to know what he had for tea or where he has just checked in to and he does not need to see only the selective best bits of someone elses life to compare his to.

I’d much prefer he simply lives life than spectates…

The things people do…

Based in fiction obviously

I watched the most recent league of Gentlemen and have had Tubbs on my mind very much and this is somewhat driven by that image of her with the pig.  If you’ve seen it you know the one.  If not you should.  Or what about that episode of Black Mirror with the pig.  Oh yes that one!

Teleporting Topless – Room 101

Clarke reached for the key on the panel, an array of lights blinking.

Let’s do another month of M’s prompts shall we.  101 words allowed only.  These tend to be snippets of things that could be or might be one day.  Or never see the light of day again.

Clarke reached for the key on the panel, an array of lights blinking.

“First full human trials commencing in 5…” He said looking up at a camera in the corner of the room.  Reaching zero he turned the key.

A bright flash lit up the room, static electricity fizzing and popping as the form of a person began to take shape on the receiver.  The air crackled as first feet and then legs took form.  Clarke waited heart racing.  The fizz popped and stopped.

His comms unit barked into life. “Boss, we have a problem.”

Clarke stared at the platform.   “Oh shit”

My Weekly Fetish Haiku 5th of January

I don’t mean offence.

Instead of stopping these it was suggested that I simply do one a week instead.  I’m sure you know which one this is right …

Only got one arm?

tell me you were born like that

I need a moment

Hey I don’t mean me there okay just a metaphorical me in the name of the haiku.  The more I research this stuff the more bizarre it gets.  I get that the heart wants what the heart wants and a very good friend mine, a strapping handsome lad of 6ft plus, is married to a hunchback dwarf.  She is lovely and they have been together forever, have a kid and have always seemed very much in love and rather happy.

Now I dont think he’s with her because of the differences though, he doesn’t seem the type of chap.  Then again I might not know him at all and he might be a right dirty bastard who only wants her because of her hump and short stature and loves nothing more than twirling her around at the end of a long day.

Hmm.  Nah, she wouldnt let him shes rather feisty.  And, if it was a proper fetish I reckon he would need more than one hunchback dwarf in his life.

Oh it’s all very confusing.

Teratophilia is the arousal to the congenitally deformed

A thought…

Think I need an early night

That was a long lon g day.  I slept terribly, the cats eventually waking me at 4am after I had stayed up far too late watching ‘Bright’.  The eldest went to a sleepover and went to bed at 4 and the youngest went to bed at 3.  I said he could watch one tv show in his brothers bed before sleep and forgot about him.

He came down to tell us all about the great TV he had watched at 3 rather wired and a little scared about something creepy but I do not recall what.

We were all reunited at lunchtime to head on a couple of hours drive out to the seaside for the afternoon.  We weren’t beyond the end of the street before the younger was crying because of something the other had thrown, the elder professed his hatred for me insisting I should perhaps stop speaking and the wife’s day was already ruined.

I think we just about pulled it back as the day progressed, mostly because the little blighters fell asleep and I heeded the warning I had been given to ‘leave them alone because I just wind them up’.

Families eh 🙂

Time and time again #writephoto

Sue provides the picture, the rest is up to you!

Sue provides the picture, the rest is up to you!

I walked past your window today

with it’s sun bleached glass and flaking paint

memories of fingerprints and noses pressed against it

as seasons passed slowly one into the next

Laughter long passed into time remembered like yesterday

Words lost like summers past

but clear as day I hear your voice

closing the window and heading in for tea

I stand and wait now as I did then

light filtering through roses wild and untended

a warmth like summer sun

from the heart and hearth within

and as I walk away I recall too well

how time has taken its toll

but memories live on where we turn to dust

and in our hearts are carried until sunset
